Mar 6 @ 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Journey Into Civilizations Photo Journal by Patrice Villastrigo @ The Jackson Ranch in the Heart of San Antonio

> Raised in a family of photographers, musicians and artists in Alamo Heights, Texas, Patrice was taught not only to appreciate art but how to view the world through the lens of a camera by her father, photo journalist, Bob Collins. Hence, Ms. Villastrigo was destined to become an artist herself, also a musician, an author and publisher, among other talents. She travels the world searching for and recording her own view of composition, colour, depth, form and beauty. She sold her paintings, sculpture and photography at her art gallery in Washington. Ms. Villastrigo has a permanent exhibit at The Historic Jackson Ranch.

> “ Since I was a child, my imagination lead me to creative outlets of all kinds, drawing, painting, sculpting, singing, writing, photography, and even designing matching clothes for Barbie and myself. I investigate often uncommon sources to search for that shot combining a perfect composition of color, depth, form, and beauty. Creating art using a variety of resources, I must admit that the camera lens is my favorite medium!”

> Live Music: First ~ pianist Edward Lewis, then, Pete’s Best featuring John Michael Ramirez, Karl Yelderman, Joe Killough and Daryl Chadick. Refreshments Served.

Cornelia White Swann: Fugitive Color II @ French & Michigan Gallery
Mar 12 @ 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Cornelia White Swann: Fugitive Color II @ French & Michigan Gallery | San Antonio | Texas | United States

French & Michigan Gallery presents Cornelia White Swann: Fugitive Color II, the second installment for the two-part exhibition featuring the artist’s recent exploration in hand-made natural pigments.

Swann’s first presentation, presented in spring 2015, highlights an intimate series of works on paper which reflects her experimentation with and search for the origins of color. Eliminating synthetic paint, the artist extracts pigments from herbs, flowers, fruits, vegetables, and other plants for compositions that evoke the pure and organic nature of their making.

Deriving its title from a term used for impermanent pigments, the exhibition signifies the vulnerable, changing state of natural color. The second presentation, set one year apart from the first, further emphasizes the artwork’s physical relation to time as Swann extends this base knowledge of living material into new forms.

Cornelia White Swann: Fugitive Color II opens March 12, and remains on view through April 30, 2016.

Exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue—release date to coincide with the second presentation in spring 2016. Designed and produced by French & Michigan, the publication includes essays by Curator Céleste Wackenhut, Curatorial Assistant Kathryn Zimmerhanzel, guest writer Liz Pearson, and statements from the artist.

Puro – On the Edge of Future (Symposium) @ BRICK
Feb 21 @ 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Puro - On the Edge of Future (Symposium) @ BRICK | San Antonio | Texas | United States

UTSA architecture group, panelists, explore the meaning of Puro in symposium at Brick in Blue Star on Feb. 21

WHAT: Dr. Antonio Petrov, assistant professor in the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning, invites San Antonio to engage in dialogue to gather a broad understanding of Puro. We hope to shed some light onto its meaning and how it materializes through the lenses of art, music, graffiti, performance, food, religion, cultural history, film, social media, TV, marketing, philosophy, and literature. The symposium, which includes UTSA students, will be led by community members who embody the term.

Puro |ˈpo͝orō|
The statement San Antonio is “Puro” is possibly a provocation. A city the size of San Antonio with all its cultural layers is so much more than one term could describe, but yet, Puro exemplifies something that belongs to all of us; an expression; attitude; a cultural sensibility; betterment; collective accomplishments; something precious the city is dearly holding on to. For some, it is reflected in rituals, art, tastes, values, aesthetics, and a certain sense of authenticity. For others, it is an underlying vibe or lifestyle that exemplifies the social fabric of San Antonio. Of all things, however, it is an active expression of a city that filters through all parts of public life. Architecture, as such, and the way its physical manifestations are contributing to how people use, create, and live in space, one could argue, has not embraced what characterizes Puro. The aesthetics of Puro are mentioned in relation to artistic movements such as expressionism, minimalism, and surrealism. In architectural discourses, however, Puro’s underlying aesthetic could be seen as kitsch, hypernormal, or ordinary; architects fear to design something that could be considered ordinary, kitsch, or not special. Though Puro defies categorization and is ubiquitous to San Antonio, this one-day symposium aims to recover what makes and shapes it and how this might translate into architecture. Through the lens of art, music, graffiti, performance, religion, cultural history, film, social media, TV, philosophy, and literature we hope to explore values, attitudes, and cultural sensibilities and how they inform the relationship between the social and the physical shaping of our city.

As San Antonio is “on the edge of future” and contemporary urban design is not only a matter of iconic architecture and ambitious masterplans, we argue, Puro is about social and cultural sustainability through which formal and informal practices not only shape the environment but also address urban problems and inequalities. Perhaps Puro is the recognition of a “new urban frame of mind” our city needs moving forward with designers that embody emancipatory processes of how we think together, experiment, collaborate, and cooperate in open and active processes of shaping and defining urban space as we are straddling the edge of future. We hope to initiate dialogue and discuss possible ways to integrate the social and cultural fabric into new ways to co-design, co-produce, co-own, and co-manage the spaces we live in. This, of course, raises the question of the role of the architect and planner in the process of developing these alternative models of urban habitation. As a result we hope this symposium can identify alternative models, ideas, and actionable objectives that build on local know-how, craftsmanship, cultural sensibilities, attitudes, and interests and thus have more direct relationships and a more Puro way of critically mediating between ethical positions and aesthetic formulations.

Bombay Salsa Co. Celebrating Contemporary Art Month! @ Blue Star Contemporary | San Antonio | Texas | United States

We opened in 2011 and are still around trying to preach the gospel that good food is about taking risks. The concept of Bombay Salsa Co started with a late night munchie mix combining tandoori chicken and pico de gallo. Now, a few years later we have converted several connoisseurs; some forcefully, but mostly by offering our captivating cuisine. Even a couple of critics think we’re doing ok, and have mentioned us now and again. Some guests have even invited us to feed their friends, which we do with pleasure serving out of trademark orange truck. Sometimes they ask us to drop it off and leave, but we watch them through the windows and see them gobble it up. We have even married a couple of customers off–taking our homemade goodies and polishing them up for the big stage.

We look forward every week to seeing everybody, because this is our social life. We put in late hours after work or early in the morning, we cut and chop and boil and bake, stir and even shake a bit, just for you our guests. Why ? Because we want you back with your friends— even dragging them by force if you have to — don’t worry we’ll be gentle. If you throw a party, give us a call. We’ll cater it and you’ll be the talk of the town.

Food has always been a passion in our family. In fact, we’ve been serving food in one way or another for four generations. We love food. We delight in preparing it, presenting it, partaking in it, and most importantly watching our friends enjoy it. We love it here in San Antonio our home away from home. So come by, visit us, and enjoy.

Artist statement:
This work, as all my work, is the result of all that has preceded it. My vision is only that which I feel – a nebulous hum that would have no real meaning if I did not attempt to make it visual. I strive to do this with iconography that has slowly evolved as I mature. I see most of my work as one frame, one snapshot, in a life of personal observation and inner search. It is a lifelong process of finding my own voice.John Mattson 2017

Dreams Are For Those Who Sleep @ Provenance Gallery
Mar 11 @ 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Dreams Are For Those Who Sleep @ Provenance Gallery | San Antonio | Texas | United States

Provenance Gallery is pleased to present, “Dreams Are for Those Who Sleep,” an exhibition featuring recent works on paper by San Antonio-based artist, Jose Fidel Sotelo. These large-scale graphite drawings are a departure from the intimate, primarily black-and-white drawings Sotelo is best known for. In this body of work, Sotelo continues to explore the meditative quality of repetitive symbolic imagery, but on a larger scale and in a more subtle tonal palette. This aesthetic shift imbues the work with an ethereal feeling, and the scale of the work envelops the viewer in Sotelo’s nocturnal world. Based on his experience of dreaming and insomnia, these autobiographical dreamscapes combine imagery from Aztec mythology and memories of the first stages of existence of a Mexican American family.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jose Fidel Sotelo has been active in the arts since 2005. He started his studies in design and photography in 2004. A year later he was moved to start painting. Sotelo considers himself a self-taught artist, but his paintings carry a lot of influence from his studies in design – using patterns and symmetry to express his relationship with the seen and unseen world and his experiences. In more recent years his work has moved from colorful paintings to black and white illustrations, prints, and drawings. As Sotelo’s art moves through its process, one thing that continues to hold true throughout its stages, is his effort to bring together the ancient symbols of his Mexican ancestors, the natural world, and the beauty of the mundane things from everyday life.

ABOUT THE GALLERY
Provenance Gallery is an independent art space dedicated to featuring innovative work by local and regional emerging artists.

Join us for a happy hour and networking opportinity with regional policy makers, civic leaders, and advocates before we move on to our next location.

6:30pm – 7pm – Multimodal Street Ride: Participants can take San Antonio B-Cycle or a VIA Metropolitan Transit bus, ride their own bikes, walk, run, Uber, Lyft, or drive from the happy hour location to game night location, Brick at Blue Star

7pm – 9pm – Transportation Game Night at Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex: Participants work in groups of five to ten to reimagine Central Texas’ streets using an online interactive tool.

We look forward to seeing you there and continuing this important regional conversation. Tickets are $10 each. LOOP members are free! Check the 12/28 newsletter for more information or email info@loop-sa.com.

Following the sale of the collection, MBS Fitness plans to complete some much-needed updates to the studio and begin holding regularly scheduled art openings for the public.

Josh Levine, serial social entrepreneur and Founder of MBS Fitness explains, “It’s hard to say goodbye to these pieces- they each mean a lot to MBS Fitness… but part of what we are about is breaking down barriers and making things accessible. Art and fitness have a lot in common- people can be really intimidated by both. I want these events to inspire people to view the respective communities with more curiosity and eventually to become more active or creative.”

AND NOW: New Works by 10 Artists

In the course of artistic expression’s long history as a chronicle of the human experience, a large number of movements and descriptions of art have transpired. Contemporary art’s most defining element is that it is rooted in the here AND NOW. This exhibit is a survey of work very recently created by artists who live in Texas but who represent a diverse array of backgrounds, experiences and influences.  In their own way, each examines a sense of place and identity amidst the technological changes and cultural shifts that propel the new century.

Catalina Sour Vasquez | Projets Dissolvants curated by Hillarey Jones @ The Gallery at MBS
Mar 1 @ 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Catalina Sour Vasquez | Projets Dissolvants curated by Hillarey Jones @ The Gallery at MBS | San Antonio | Texas | United States

For this year’s Contemporary Art Month, the Gallery at MBS will present a solo exhibition by French/Chilean photographer, Catalina Sour Vasquez, organized by independent curator, Hillarey Jones.

Vasquez’s series Projets Dissolvants is the catalyst for what has become her own unique, surrealist style. Superimposing imagery that caters to the senses with her delicately designed mise en scene, while utilizing color and über surrealist elements, she allows the viewer to focus on one specific, if not subconscious, component of the photograph – often addressing the social impact of our mundane everyday lives and the toll that it infiltrates on our mental and physical well being. There are direct references, colors or details that placate to a specific smell, touch or often taste. She will shamelessly critique society’s tendencies for mass consumption utilizing a candy coated stage that is easy for us to digest…and almost impossible to resist.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 7:30-9:30pm inside the gallery space at MBS. The artist will be present to greet guests and answer any questions. Light refreshments will be provided.

Artist A.J. Rodriguez

Artist Statement:
A.J. Rodriquez has always had a passion for sketching and painting. His late-grandmother would provide him with notebook paper to draw on every day in his youth, he was always partial toward drawing on cardboard. Over the years, he has created many pieces of art often donating them to admirers of his work. It is not uncommon for restaurant owners throughout San Antonio to have torn butcher paper sketches of his work where he is often known to sketch before and after meals.

AJ’s process begins with a thought, theme or feeling, followed by a rough sketch (sketches and studies almost always accompany his larger paintings). He enjoys painting big, bold pieces that cover a canvas with bright deep rich colors. He is partial to acrylic, metallic, and ink. This show debuts his endeavoring with oils. His paintings have thick strokes in his impressionistic, abstract art. Those observing his work often comment on the movement, shape and multi-dimensional qualities.

A.J. was most encouraged by his wife Estelle to take up his palette and brushes once again; she is considered his artistic, and obviously, most trusted advisor, hence “Colecciones de art’ – A.J.’s birth name and “+e” for Estelle. He works from his studios in King William and Lone Star Art Space.

A.J. spent time in Mexico City visiting Plaza Mexico researching the pageantry, mystique, brutality, vividness and beauty of the traditional Spanish Bullfight. In this latest series titled “Colores e Imágenes; Arena y Sangre” A.J. works to inspire each observer to suspend judgment of the activity and outcome of this centuries old event and rather focus on the spectacle of the colors, movement, grit and illumination of the intimate relationship and final dance between man and bull. Hemingway comments in “Death in the Afternoon,” “Bullfighting is the only art where the artist is in danger of death…” A.J. was inspired by this level of passion and ultimate commitment to artistic expression.

The Linda Pace Foundation announces its 2018 exhibition, Reclaimed, a presentation of 25 monochromatic works by some of the most influential contemporary female artists working today, all drawn from the Foundation’s diverse collection. Artists include Laura Aguilar, Dorothy Cross, Judy Dater, Annette Messager, Lorraine O’Grady, Robyn O’Neil, Linda Pace, Tracey Rose, Lara Schnitger and Kiki Smith, with works spanning 1975 through 2009.

As the title implies, the exhibition addresses the concept of ownership—both literally and figuratively—and the notion of “reclaiming” what’s ours, from our lands and governments to our physical bodies and basic human rights. Central to each of the works on view are themes of nature, identity and the female form, often times as a depiction of non-traditional feminine ideals. For instance, in Mexican-American photographer Laura Aguilar’s self-portrait series, Stillness, the artist displays her large, naked body against the natural landscape. By fusing the cracked earth, bulbous rocks and knotted tree trunks of the San Antonio wilderness with the curvatures and folds of her own unconventional shape, Aguilar asserts her beauty as an extension of nature.

Other artists in the exhibition address these themes by exploring the decentralization of the human body. In Annette Messager’s sculptural installation Mes voeux sous filets, dozens of photographs, each containing a single foot, mouth, ear, nose, breast, etc. hang beneath a layer of netting. Inspired by religious relics historically hung from church ceilings, Messager employs these symbols as a commentary on blurred gender binaries and the widespread objectification of the physical form.

Similarly, in Landscape (Western Hemisphere), a single channel video installation, Lorraine O’Grady’s hair serves as the primary subject. Filmed at an extreme close-up and presented without context, the gently-blowing strands are reminiscent of a dense forest, and by drawing this comparison between African American femininity and the western world, O’Grady points to the fraught history of colonization and its continued effects on racial equality today.

Throughout the exhibition, the color palette—or lack thereof—and focus on photography, film, cast sculpture and works on paper, underscores the seriousness of the subject matter and harkens back to more traditional methods of artistic production. A departure from the Foundation’s typical spotlight on experimental and new media works, this unexpected selection provides insight into the depth and variedness of the permanent collection.

About Linda Pace Foundation

Linda Pace Foundation is committed to the charitable vision of its founder. Guided by the donor’s conviction that contemporary art is essential to a dynamic society, Linda Pace Foundation fosters the creation, presentation and understanding of innovative expression through contemporary art.

Linda Pace Foundation publicly exhibits its collection through loans to museums and Space Gallery, its public exhibition gallery. Free and open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, 12 noon – 5pm, Space Gallery showcases the collection of late philanthropist and artist Linda Pace, as well as related contemporary art exhibitions on an ongoing basis. Visitors enter through Chris Park to access Space Gallery, experiencing the meandering beauty of another of Linda Pace’s creations.

Since 2007, the Foundation has loaned hundreds of works to institutions such as: Pulitzer Arts Center in St. Louis, Missouri, Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, Tate in London, MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass., Brooklyn Museum in New York, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey – MARCO in Mexico and others.

The Foundation fulfills Linda Pace’s vision of supporting the work of international contemporary artists. Acquisitions typically echo the themes and character of Pace’s own collecting, which favored works that reflected a feminist perspective, engaged social issues and considered aspects of spirituality and beauty.

Since Linda Pace’s death in 2007, the Foundation has steadfastly worked towards realizing her vision, in fact her mandate – to create a contemporary art center for the community, artists and the world to experience contemporary art. Sir David Adjaye has designed a building, which will open to the public in 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. The building will exhibit the Foundation’s growing collection and serve as a destination for visitors to contemplate and experience adventurous artwork from the recent past.

Curated by Arturo Infante Almeida

St. Paddy's Day Beer Release @ Dorćol Distilling + Brewing Co. | San Antonio | Texas | United States

No fake green beer at our St. Paddy’s Day Party (you’re welcome). Instead, ring in this year’s National Drinking Holiday with the much anticipated return of our HighWheel Irish Red Ale.

The easy-drinking, Irish-style red ale is full of dark and roasted malts that create a rich malty sweetness with accents of toffee and toast. English hops varieties – UK Fuggle and East Kent Goldings – provide an earthy, balanced bitterness to a traditional ale that finishes dry.

Come early. Stay late.

"Resurrection" works by Tom Turner @ Dorćol Distilling + Brewing Co. | San Antonio | Texas | United States

Resurrection, a collection of waveform photographs, explores the representation of landscape as a way of seeing. Using topography, the photographic frame creates a trompe l’oeil, generating ambiguous, or even alien, perceptions with little or no anchorage. Terraforming the land in their mind’s eye, the viewer generates mountains, valleys, and impact craters in an attempt to understand and transform wilderness into landscape.

Michael Menchaca: Vignettes from San Antonio @ Ruiz-Healy Art | Olmos Park | Texas | United States

Ruiz-Healy Art, San Antonio, Texas, is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Michael Menchaca. The exhibition “Vignettes from San Antonio” opens to the public Wednesday, January 24 from 6:00 -8:00 pm and will be on view through May 12, 2018.

Michael Menchaca earned his master’s degree from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design in 2015 with a concentration in printmaking. A San Antonio native, Menchaca is known to juxtapose images from popular culture with Mesoamerican iconography. Vignettes from San Antonio is a new series of work that is inspired by the artist’s hometown. Large collage works speak to the cultural landscape of San Antonio and are made in honor of the city’s Tricentennial. Highlighting such iconic San Antonio scenes as the boots at North Star Mall, Easter weekend Camping at Brackenridge Park, and Fiesta, Menchaca uses Illustrator to build a new codex of hieroglyphs with the essence of the city.

Michael Wayne Lackey | Wonders From Above Curated by Lone Star Art Space @ ReMax New Hights

Each sunrise or sunset is a glorious creation in its own right. Each cloud pattern is unique and beautiful. Looking upward, stopping time, each photo tells its own story and helps the viewer see the sky in new ways with deep and varied layers of colors and patterns. This collection is a display of the power of light, darkness and patterns– Wonders from Above.

“I gravitate towards exploring the wonders in our world which we so take for granted, that we don’t even notice anymore. Each simple creation around us say so much and is so worthy of wonder. My work also is inspired by the simple, yet powerfully complex nature that happen around us every day. We all share the sky. I revel in the wonderful Texas skies, sunrises and sunsets – the exquisite light, adjusting from dark to bright and back again each and every day – such an awesome sight to behold.”

Michael Wayne Lackey is a native San Antonian and Texan with a family history that goes back twelve generation. Michael is a practicing engineer who discovered creating art as expression of the abstract side of the technical mind. Capturing ordinary moments from his mobile device, this is his first solo photography show. He has previously exhibited with other photograph students at the Southwest Craft Center (now Southwest Art Institute). He has previously shown his acrylic painting and oil pastel works.

This exhibit is curated by Lone Star Art Space an Artist Incubation Space located 107 Lone Star Blvd., San Antonio, TX. 78204 – in the heart of Lone Star Art District and has been made possible through the support of ReMax New Hights.

Natalie Melendez is a Marfa-based artist of California extraction. She creates work that utilizes American detritus. The work is largely centered around collage, though the material is ever-changing. Focusing more on form than metaphor, the works, though largely on paper, are tactile and sculptural. Melendez is currently working on a series of colleges entitled Birds of America that will be adapted into a book.

Van Hanos’s approach to painting is varied, united almost entirely by its stylistic unpredictability. Ranging from landscape to portraiture, recent work continues to explore perceptual shifts and thematic rupture. (b. 1979, Edison) currently lives in Marfa, Texas. Recent solo exhibitions include “Late American Paintings”, Château Shatto (Los Angeles), “Mommy’s boy”, Cleopatra’s (New York), “Awake At The Funeral”, Tanya Leighton (Berlin), “Van Hanos”, Parapet Real Humans (St. Louis), “Intercalaris”, Rowhouse Project (Baltimore), and “Van Hanos”, West Street Gallery (New York). His work has been reviewed in Flash Art, Artforum, Art in America, and the New York Times Magazine.

Moritz Landgrebe spent his childhood and adolescence in both Germany and the U.S., primarily in Bremen and Marfa. After graduating from Marfa High School in 2008, he studied at both the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and the University of North Texas in Denton, and received a BFA in sculpture from the latter school in 2014. Upon graduating, Moritz moved back to Marfa where he has been living and working since.

Ross Cashiola is a multidisciplinary artist who currently resides in Marfa, Texas where he has lived and worked since 2006. Hotel Brotherhood is the name of his musical project for the last 15 years and the last exhibition of his visual art was at MASS gallery in Austin as part of Sam Schonzeit’s “Showing People” exhibit there in July of 2016. Other exhibitions include “Drawings – Marfa Book Company” April 2014 and “Potential Energies – Secret Histories Museum” Chicago 2006

Norbert Garcia was born in Southern Arizona and grew up in Tucson. He studied art at the Oxbow School in Napa Valley, California and Santa Monica College in Los Angeles. In 2015 Norbert graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in sculpture. He currently lives and works in Newport, RI.

Amanda Benavides lives and works in San Antonio, Texas. She was born and raised in Crystal City, Texas. She received her BA in Visual Arts and Sociology from Columbia University. After a semester in the MFA Design+Technology program at Parsons The New School, she took a leave to instead work for artists. Since then, she has maintained her own art/design brand called Mâché. Benavides’ fine art work ranges across many mediums, and often explores the ideas of action, physicality, gender, race, hip hop culture, queerness, and violence.

Subjective Timbre: Works by Amada Miller @ The Gallery at MBS Yoga

Subjective Timbre: Works by Amada Miller @ The Gallery at MBS Yoga
Subjective Timbre is an exhibition of works based on the color dualities of Johannes Itten’s theory of color. Using naturally derived and synthetic dye processes, Miller will employ fiber and sculpture to explore an individual’s preferred color combinations. This exhibition will also present a movement based performance influenced by Itten’s core belief system of the Mazdaznan Health & Breath Culture. Itten taught a group of stretching and posing exercises to his students on the roof of Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany from 1919 to 1923 called The Egyptian Postures, movements that are claimed to be descended directly from the Pharaohs.
Amada Miller is an artist based in San Antonio, Texas. Her work has been exhibited at Agora Gallery, AP Art Lab, Artpace San Antonio, Blue Star Contemporary, Capsule Gallery, Flight Gallery, French & Michigan, the McNay Art Museum, Palmetto Center for the Arts at Northwest Vista College, Sala Diaz and The University of Texas at San Antonio. She recently completed a residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien via Blue Star Contemporary’s Berlin Residency program, where she worked closely with curators and research staff at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. Future solo exhibitions include Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio, TX), Cinnabar (San Antonio, TX), Useable Space (Milwaukee, WI) and Porcino (Berlin).

Leigh Anne Lester: No Necessary Time Axis on Evolutionary Novelties @ Ruiz-Healy Art

Ruiz-Healy Art is pleased to present No Necessary Time Axis on Evolutionary Novelties, a solo exhibition of new works by Leigh Anne Lester. The exhibition will open to the public with a reception on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The show is accompanied by a catalogue written with an essay by Hills Snyder.

Long interested in how the natural world evolves and changes, Lester creates a body of work that encompasses an intergenerational microscopic and macroscopic view of abstracted information. “The work in the show is a recurring visual vocabulary. If the viewer follows those clues they will find information resurfacing in different pieces throughout this exhibit. A very slow motioned animation of generational manifestations” explains Lester.

Patricia Ruiz-Healy states, “I have admired the work of Lester for a while. Her personal interpretation of genetic modification pair with a masterful draftsmanship and the incorporation of other medium has brought to the long-established botanical drawings tradition a 21st C. aesthetic.”

Her drawings are layers of semi-transparent drafting film with a historical botanical drawn on each layer. The transparency of the drafting film allows the line of each botanical to optically blend with the next layer. Elements of each of the plants mix and tangle their visual attributes intermingling disparate species of flora. Floating cells are layered with graphite drawings of separate distorted offspring plants with their color drained, implying a cellular, morphological struggle for resolution.

Lester’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States. Her solo exhibitions include McNay Art Museum, Lawndale Art Center, Houston, TX; Artpace, San Antonio, TX; Institute of Texan Cultures, San Antonio, TX; Southwest School of Art, San Antonio, TX; and the International Museum of Surgical Science, Chicago, IL. She is the recipient of prestigious awards including the 2011 Hunting Prize and the Artist Foundation of San Antonio in 2007. In 2015, she was selected to participate in the Berlin Residency Program by Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum in partnership with Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany. Lester’s artworks are in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, McNay Art Museum and the University of Texas at San Antonio, among other institutions.

Founded in 2004 and located in the historic Olmos Park District of San Antonio, Ruiz-Healy Art specializes in contemporary art with an emphasis on Latinx, Latin American, and Texas-based artists. To request high-resolution images and more information about the exhibition, please contact the gallery at info@ruizhealyart.com or 210-804-2219. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM and by appointment.

Leigh Anne Lester: No Necessary Time Axis on Evolutionary Novelties will be on view through May 25, 2019.
