Tell Me What it Feels Like @ Flax Studio

Tell Me What it Feels Like @ Flax Studio | San Antonio | Texas | United States

Flax studio hosts Tell Me What it Feels Like, a solo show by Texas based photographer India Treat for Contemporary Art Month 2018.

About the exhibition:

The media depicts women as one-dimensional bodies. Our canons are limited to cleaning, laundry, and eating salads while smiling. The average woman portrayed in the media is young, thin, and white. This limited scope is outdated and stifles young women’s confidence and thus, their potential. A narrow depiction of our sex has allowed for the continued oppression of women and systemic patriarchy, which limits our growth and potential as a culture.

Frustration with this limiting canon lead me to answering this important question: “What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life?” (Muriel Rukeyser, “Käthe Kollwitz”). In order to begin answering this question, I asked the women I knew. “What is your truth? Where do you feel most powerful? Vulnerable? Or Whole?” This work is an exploration of their answers.

The women I photographed wanted to be seen in far more complex ways than the stories we’ve been told. With each new subject I documented, the definition, by which women want to be portrayed, grew. Subsequently, this body of work became more accurate through the representation of a diverse group of women. Their images challenge the male gaze and disrupt a tired narrative. I’ve found that if women told the truth about their lives, “the world would split open” (Muriel Rukeyser, “Käthe Kollwitz”).
