Highlighting San Antonio’s most interesting artists

Art SA Gallery is pleased to announce their Inaugural Exhibition, TRANSFORMATIONS: New Work by Jane Bishop and Daniel Saldaña.  With a focus on affordable, contemporary art by San Antonio’s most interesting artists, Art SA Gallery will open its doors to the public on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 6 – 10 pm to celebrate Contemporary Art Month.

This exciting launch of a new gallery located in charming Monte Vista was envisioned by Owner and Director Darryl Mix.  A long time supporter of the arts, Mix brings an authoritative eye and enthusiasm to the contemporary art scene in San Antonio.  “It in my intention to bring interesting, engaging and affordable art to the San Antonio community,” says Darryl Mix.

In TRANSFORMATIONS: New Work by Jane Bishop and Daniel Saldaña, Mix paired these two artists due to their reinvention of everyday objects into incredible works of art.

Renowned textile designer Jane Bishop takes vintage furniture and infuses them with intriguing hand-dyed custom fabrics and collected fibers and found objects.  She uses vintage chairs as a frame stretching and upholstering pieces fiber creations making the old into something new, fun, and fabulous.  A member of the Rock Paper Scissors Collective, Bishop has been creating one-of-a-kind scarves, wearables, furniture and linens for over 12 years.  Her art encompasses the use of hand-dyed cloth, stamp art, silk-screen, stencil and drawings onto natural fibers such as silk, linen, cotton, rayon and hemp.

Daniel Saldaña creates an alchemy of beautiful found object gilded sculptures that are both contemporary and baroque in nature.   A self taught artist, Saldaña work represents the culmination of high-low art.  By scavenging local area flea markets and garage sales to find the genesis of his creations, Saldaña then deconstructs pieces into their new form and welds the new configuration before electroplating the art work in coats of nickel, chrome or bronze.  Whether finished in a matte or glossy surface, the sculptural medium he uses creates a sense of whimsy and unexpected exploration of common everyday objects.

Art SA Gallery plans to rotate exhibitions every 4 months to highlight artists and artwork of varying styles and mediums.  The artists represented by the gallery will represent the amazing diversity of San Antonio’s creative community.
