Verónica Prida and Omar Rodríguez will appear in a rare joint exhibit at Rendon Photography & Fine Art, 733 S. Alamo, as Contemporary Art Month dawns. Friday, March 2 from 6 until 10 p.m. and Saturday, March 3 from 2 until 6 p.m.
Prida's woven textiles, adapted from traditional Mayan huipiles (embroidered and embellished tunics or blouses, often bearing symbolic designs), adorn stunning pieces of furniture and accessories that instantly become the stars in their rooms. They sing of walking along trails lit by the Oaxacan sun, waking you in the morning and coloring your dreams at night. Prida incorporates beautiful hand embroidered, woven, and crotched textiles in her furniture pieces to honor, preserve, and expose many to the beauty and history of this art form.
Rodríguez paintings reflect the chaos of passion conflicting with the real world, depicted in colors that shine back to ancient Mayan murals. Imagine deep layers of paint, each coat frenetically applied, then jabbed and prodded, stabbed and carved in a process Omar calls "ceremonial scraping." There is no plan, not even in the regular vertical lines created by tape applied and removed without regard to intention. Stick, finger, branch, fork, foot, Rodríguez keeps flowing and digging paint, creating until it reflects his journey on expressing mortality, peace, spiritual beliefs, joys and sorrows. Rodríguez is constantly searching for what is beyond the superficial and approaches every piece as if it were his last.
The exhibit is only open for 8 hours – blink and you will miss it. Come and take some of this magic home with you.
