Rowe (1920-2007) was born in Brooklyn, New York. In 1943, he graduated from Princeton University where he majored in Spanish literature. Subsequently, he was a World War II veteran, studied at the Art Students League in New York, and lived in Cuba where he befriended Ernest Hemingway.
In 1964, Rowe moved to San Antonio to become head of the faculty at the San Antonio Art Institute. Later he became chairman of the exhibition committee at the Witte Museum, which featured visual art exhibits at the time. Rowe made a major contribution to the visual arts in San Antonio and South Texas.
Reginald Rowe’s prolific production and regular exhibition history, and his importance as a teacher and mentor, granted him a retrospective at the McNay Art Museum in 1995.
