Please join David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art, for a conversation with artist Franco Mondini-Ruiz.  Originally trained as a lawyer, Mondini-Ruiz turned to art making in the 1990s, a decade when artists across the United States were dealing with the constant tug-of-war between the need to identify with one’s heritage and the desire to pursue typical American ideals.  The son of an upper-class Italian father and a Mexican-American mother, Mondini-Ruiz grew up in San Antonio’s white suburbs in a household filled with dialogue and conflict based on class, ethnicity, and cultural perspectives. This complex family dynamic echoed the cultural milieu of San Antonio during the artist’s coming of age. Mondini-Ruiz lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.
