Laurie Brainerd began creating art quilts in 2005 after bridging an 18-year accounting career with being a life coach.   With this coaching background, Laurie challenges the boundaries around her including “What is an art quilt?”  She is especially interested in the textural and dimensional qualities of quilt-making and is currently working on a body of work about self-acceptance.

Laurie believes that quilting makes the quilt.  She calls her style of quilting—“quilting the hell out of it”—densely quilting almost the entire surface of each quilt.    Her work has been described as cloth paintings and bridges the gap between the quilt world and the art world. 

Laurie's studio is located on the 3rd floor of the artist enclave on the northeast corner of Jones and Broadway, two blocks east of the San Antonio Museum of Art.
